@soegaard2 new keeb?

laurent.orseau

This keyboard is really weird: the space bar is backwards!

me1884
2020-8-11 10:36:14

That’s a common “trick”!

Flipping the spacebar makes it easier to press in some positions.

laurent.orseau
2020-8-11 10:39:17

First time I hear about that :slightly_smiling_face:

laurent.orseau

(personally I like the MS natural keyboard)

A lot of people mention wanting to use Racket at work - this is probably a good indicator of the due diligence you need to do in any organisation if you want it to be a success.

soegaard2

The keyboard with struck me as ideal for Slack. Didn’t notice the space bar.

Can confirm everything in the thread. Google is a bit of an outlier because of how much custom-built infrastructure there is in place.

laurent.orseau
2020-8-11 13:04:28

I’ve been told explicitly that Racket will not be supported :disappointed:

laurent.orseau
2020-8-11 13:05:07

But the reasons are reasonable though

spdegabrielle
2020-8-11 13:05:55

just to be clear, I’m not suggesting embedding racket in google, just that if someone is interested in using racket(or any #lang) in their organisation, they should be aware it is a significant amount of work.

spdegabrielle
2020-8-11 13:07:28

that was a nice break…back to debugging in ‘Intersystems ObjectScript’ :disappointed:

spdegabrielle
2020-8-11 13:08:55

I love the colour gradient.

laurent.orseau
2020-8-11 13:09:26

That said, I do use Racket for almost everything I do at work, it’s just that everything stays on my desktop and I can’t use Racket with Google’s resources

spdegabrielle

Is the top right led for arrow-pad lock?

samdphillips
2020-8-11 18:43:14

You mean the indicator LED? I think that’s for “Scroll-lock” a key that has been on almost every keyboard I’ve owned but I have never figured out what it is for.

samdphillips
2020-8-11 18:43:37

(ugh now I realize how dirty it is)

laurent.orseau
2020-8-11 18:43:50

scroll lock is the leftmost one I suppose. What about the rightmost one?

laurent.orseau
2020-8-11 18:44:16

(middle one is caps lock I guess)

laurent.orseau
2020-8-11 18:44:24

numpad lock, silly me

laurent.orseau
2020-8-11 18:45:09

hm, no wait, I’m tired… yes, it’s scroll lock :man-facepalming:

samdphillips
2020-8-11 18:46:10

The steel plate inside it gives it a real heft

laurent.orseau
2020-8-11 18:47:39

that’s what real keyboards are made of :racing_car:

laurent.orseau
2020-8-11 18:48:52

At least it won’t budge even if you type with a hammer

soegaard2
2020-8-11 19:39:12

Scroll lock? Wasn’t that for DOS - for pausing text written to the screen?

samdphillips
2020-8-11 19:40:55

Maybe? I just use Ctrl-S Ctrl-Q :stuck_out_tongue:

samdphillips
2020-8-11 19:59:39

Before keyboards with fancy multimedia controls I mapped print screen, pause and scroll lock to :black_left_pointing_double_triangle_with_vertical_bar: :black_right_pointing_triangle_with_double_vertical_bar: :black_right_pointing_double_triangle_with_vertical_bar: in XMMS.
