A long time ago, my co-author made me write the LaTeX macros \ie and \eg to ensure consistency, and I’ve always used them since. Italics and comma.

Nice idea to use macros for ie and eg. The link you posted earlier suggests that the traditions in the US and UK w.r.t. italicization differ.

I tend to use a minimal set of abbreviations for the same reasons. But even though i.e., e.g. and etc. are abbreviations for latin words, I tend to think of them as english abbreviations.

They kind of are English abbreviations because eventually we must consider nationalized something that came from abroad. Otherwise we would probably find out that these expressions were not quite Latin as we might think. If we zoom in too much, all boundaries get blurred! :slightly_smiling_face:

I’ve solved four of these, and I’m pretty sure I know the answers to the other five; but I don’t know why the answers are the answers. It’s driving me nuts. If anyone wants to collaborate on NOHHPQ_ let me know!

Great one. I’ve used it before. Thanks for sharing!

This site is also quite nice. I looked into the word “logarithm” a couple of years ago. I can remember that it came from “logos” (but that can mean anything :slightly_smiling_face: ), but that Napier never explained why he chose the word. https://jeff560.tripod.com/l.html

Thanks for sharing. Yeah, shame on Napier. :slightly_smiling_face: It’s nice when people leave that trace of how everything was put together. Long live literate programming. (I don’t think literate programming is catching on, though.)

Just tried racket-mode (downloaded from MELPA) with GNU Emacs 27.1 (build 1, x86_64-w64-mingw32) of 2020–08–21. The IDE works, but I tried the MacroExpand-file-feature and I got this message. macro-debugger/stepper-text: does not work in your version of Racket. Please try an older or newer version. What’s the best Emacs version for using racket-mode?

I have no idea what the answer to your question is, but I’ll point out that there is an #emacs channel :stuck_out_tongue:

I don’t know an answer either, but note that it complains about the version of your Racket, not version of your Emacs.

Oh! I had not noticed that! Thanks!

FTR, I’m running Racket 7.6. (Welcome to Racket v7.6.) I’ll try an update. Just to see what happens.

It works with the latest Racket 7.9 [bc]. I’m keeping that one. Thanks @sorawee for spotting the problem!

I thought I remembered @greg found a bug in a version and put that message in there.

oh yeah, I seem to remember it was very specifically version 7.6

Lol. I’m so lucky. But that’s history now. I’m in 7.9 and I was nicely surprised with a much faster DrRacket. Nice work! But I’m so grateful for Greg’s work on racket-mode. So impressive. I am one of those that love the GNU Emacs. I believe I have successfully upgraded to Emacs 27.1 from Emacs 24.3. There may be pitfalls to be discovered soon, but since I made this far, it’s likely i’m on for good now.
